Sinkholes can be caused by rock erosion, commonly limestone, or seepage from an above-ground stream or pipe.

This week's sinkhole in Georgia swallowed a Sonic restaurant and led many people to wonder why there have been so many sinkholes lately. One theory is that as people build in previously untouched areas, new sinkholes are uncovered. Heavy rains and drought can also lead to sinkholes, most of which are small and harmless.
